I want all my players to be like Tiger!
ALEX FERGUSON wants his Manchester United stars to develop the “Eye of the Tiger” as they continue their chase for the Quintuple.
The Old Trafford boss is hoping his weary squad can retain the same hunger and drive as the American golf legend.
Woods has won 14 Majors and is the most decorated golfer still playing. But last month he showed his appetite for success had not been affected by a nine-month absence following knee surgery.
He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational trophy at Bay Hill — as well as more admiration from the United manager.
His Red Devils will need some of that drive and determination as they look to keep their hopes alive in the title race, Champions League and FA Cup this week.
Fergie said: “I think it can be difficult for some types of person — that their nature, when they get into a comfortable zone, is to relax too much and they can’t get it back.
“Whereas real stars — you think of Tiger Woods — he’s been off golf for months, comes back after that knee operation and there he is, he wins that tournament last week.
“You tell me what drives him on — it is that they’re special people. No matter how successful they are, they have a driving force in them that makes them want to win the next one and the next one — that’s their nature.
“Others’ nature is ‘oh I don’t need to go to work tomorrow, I’ve got enough money, I’ll retire at 30’.
“And you see people even in banking world or commerce and they retire at 45-50 years of age. They should be working till they’re 70.
“So, you can’t change the nature of people. You hope you can and we’ve had experience of changing players’ attitudes in some things.
“But, you don’t know how they’re going to handle success — when they get a bit of money, what are they going to be like?
“You don’t know that ’til it hits you in the face or you see it and you say to yourself ‘he’s changed’ and you have to do something about it.”
Fergie had tried to play down United’s chances of lifting five trophies this season even before their recent slump.
But having made a mistake by opting to play twice in 48 hours last week, he admits the fixtures have now fallen well.
United face a crunch week at home and Europe with Champions League and FA Cup hopes on the line after today’s trip to Sunderland.
And Fergie believes it is ideal preparation. He said: “We now have had a four-day rest from Porto to the Sunderland match.
“Then a four-day rest between Sunderland and Porto second leg and four days before the Everton semi-final.
“So that is the best position we have had for a few weeks in terms of the spacing of the games.
“Four days recovery is fine for us. It’s perfect. We’re in this situation every season but to get the four days is terrific.”
He hopes the late goal United conceded on Tuesday night to put a whole new complexion on their tie with Porto could prove to be the ‘watershed’.
He said: “There is always one in everything and hopefully Tuesday was it for us.
“Losing that late goal was a real kick in the teeth to us. We had done well to get into the position we were in, winning 2-1.
“Our second-half performance was very good actually. At the time you are watching matches you’re never sure of the performance level. But having seen the video, we did very well in that second half. Hopefully we can start keeping clean sheets again, which is important in terms of the championship.”
With less than two months of the domestic season to go, Fergie will tell his players to forget the last few weeks and look to the future.
He added: “What I think I have got to do now is to remind the players that where we are at the moment, we are.
“It doesn’t matter what happened on Tuesday night against Porto, we’re still in the European Cup with a chance.
“We’re in the FA Cup semi-final with a chance, we’re top of the league with a chance.
“What more can I do with my players but just to remind them why we got here and that we are where we are. We’re in a fantastic position.”
United have a one point lead over Liverpool and a game in hand going into another crucial weekend of league football.
Last season, Fergie’s men secured the title with a last-day triumph at Wigan and he admits he would not have a problem if it goes down to the wire again.
He said: “I’d be happy with that. It would do me fine. We’re used to that one — we’ve done it four times.”
Midfielder Michael Carrick insists the champions will bounce back from their dip in form. He said: “Obviously we have not helped ourselves because we are doing things that we have not done for so long.
“But we are going to put them right and I am sure we will start tomorrow. Then we can look back and see it as nothing more than a blip during a long season.”
Carrick also dismissed the idea that pressure and tiredness are taking their toll.
He added: “I don’t know if pressure is a factor, I have been through this each season I have been at the club. We expect to be successful. You become used to it.
“Fatigue is not an excuse either. We have a big squad with all the facilities we need, so tiredness does not come into it.”
United’s goal difference is now two worse than Liverpool’s but Carrick insists they are purely concerned with three points — not boosting their goals tally.
about winning games and picking up points. We all want to play well and win by lots of goals but it is not like that.
“Sometimes it is the games you come through when you are not at your best that give you the best feeling.”
